Howard...
The Kenwood TS-520 and the Yaesu FT-101ZD are both decent "hybrid" (solid
state receiver, tube finals in the transmitter) rigs and worth the money,
but they were both already out of production when you quit ham radio 12
years ago. They date from the 1970's. For another $100 or so, you can get
a fully solid-state rig, the Kenwood 120 for example. You havn't lived
until you have been able to QSY to your heart's content without returning
..retuning...the transmitter.

Because many hams out there misuse it and 90+% are busting the
rules when using cross-band repeat. It is plain illegal
in some countries. If you are going to use it, please be
careful to choose your frequencies carefully.

Is there anything like this, preferably in machine-readable format?

Subject: Need some help with the design of an Operational Amplifier
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
hello there,
I have a question concerning design of a simple amplifier using
operational amplifiers. I am simply designing a noninverting amplifier with a
gain of 2, that is R1=R2 ( Closed Loop Gain=(1+R2/R1) ). No matter what I apply
to the input of the amp the output always saturates to -11 Volts. Even if no
input is applied the output still gives a -11V.
The voltages that I am applying to the Vcc+ and Vcc- of the op amp are +12V and
-12V respectively. I am using the LM 741 opamp for this application.
Does anybody in this group happen to know what the problem might be?
I would appreciate any relevant response.
Please e-mail.
Thanks in advance
Chris

It's a shame to retire my Drake UV-3 to packet service, now that virtually
every local repeater requires PL tones.
So I've been thinking about setting up an outboard sub-audible and DTMF
encoder. Now the encoder and the DTMF pad are easy to obtain. However,
most of the encoders seem to want a 5-bit encoding of values from 0-31
to select the sub-audible tones.
The control circuits seem like a significant challenge. Does anyone
know of a construction article or a kit for a sub-audible encoder
with a human interface which is better than a row of dip switches?

Marymac is a Radio Shack franchise store that sells Radio Shack
products through the mail at lower prices than the Radio Shack
catalog. They don't charge tax (unless you live in TX) and they
include the cost of shipping in the cost of the item.

The frequency range sugests that this is an aircraft band radio. You
really dont want to talk with it,since air comms are quite sensitive to
interference and highly protected by the FCC.

Subject: Yaesu ext mike/PTT circuit
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
Would someone who has built (or bought and took apart) an external
microphone with external push-to-talk for a Yaesu radio please send me the
circuit diagram they used?
I am trying to build an external microphone with external push-to-talk
switch (PTT) for my Yaesu FT-530 radio. Problem is, I am not sure of the
best circuit to use. My Yaesu manual describes the mic jack as being 3
conductor, with the tip for the mic connection and the ring having DC
voltage to bias the mic. No mention of the middle conductor.
I measured the ring connection of the radio jack and it was 5V below the
tip connection, and appeared to have an impedance of 5Kohm between the
ring and the tip. I suppose I could just wire the microphone directly to
these two connections with the PTT switch in series (the mic I am using
has an impedance of 1Kohm). But I examined one external mic with PTT at
radio shack which claimed to work with Yaesu and it had a 470pF capacitor
and 2.2Kohm resistor in parallel with the mic. The radio shack model used
2 of the 3 connections on the jack.
Any suggestions?

I have a 470 and find it to be a great general purpose, dual bander. I had an
IC-W2A that was stolen and replaced it with the 470. Intermod trouble was
about the same for both radios. I have never heard any call a dual band hand
held "bulletproof". Not a lot of bells and whistles. There could be better
isolation between the two bands.
